Rebuilding the Brightmoor Community - A Target Area Redevelopment Plan
Despite the monumental efforts and successes over the years, the significant economic challenges of the last several years have dramatically stalled any substantial recovery for Detroit and its beleaguered neighborhoods. The realization that Detroit must “downsize” and redefine land use is obvious. However, there is no simple solution that will transform decades of decline and the negative effect of long-term social, economic and political issues that have distressed our region.
In an attempt to move from despair, apathy and inaction caused by the lack of resources, the longevity and enormity of the issues and the size of the City in general, Brightmoor Neighborhood Development is proposing to offer a business plan of hope, empowerment and a strategy that targets the four square miles of Brightmoor as a test case for redefining neighborhoods.
We believe that the following set of six (6) investment opportunities and ten (10) recommendations identify a structure and a plan through which we propose to transform Brightmoor. If the effort is successful, it could be the template and example of what could be possible throughout Detroit at the neighborhood level utilizing the skills, talents and enthusiasm of its residents and their representative Community Development Corporations.
